    Default 1 Humminbird, 2 locations

I am about to pull the trigger on an 899 (I think, I seem to change my mind daily). Anyway, until I am able to buy a second unit up front, would I be able to pull my 899 from the back when I get to where I am going so I can see it when im fishing up front when im running the trolling motor? If so, what would I need to make itva simple operation?

I did that and used the transom transducer. All you need is another power cable and a transducer extension cable. If you buy another TD to mount on TM that would be better.

If I get a terrova, is the built in transducer, the universal sonar, sufficient instead of buying a second transducer?

Not if you want to use all the functions. The transducer in motor is for 2d only. If you want Side and down and do not want to buy extra transducer then do it like Wilbur said.

It really depends on what sonar you want to use when you are fishing at the bow. As others have stated; the 2D sonar (200/83kHz) from the US2 will work but you will not have any Si/Di sonar unless you mount an Si transducer up front as well.

It also depend on how you are going to mount the unit at the bow. By using a mount system like a RAM mount you could buy two mount bases for it and not have to buy the Humminbird GM-2 Gimbal Mount.

Let me know how you want to proceed and I can get you a parts list of what you will need.

Greg, I just purchased a Helix5 from BPS but let the salesman talk me out of putting it on the trolling motor. What are the pros and cons of doing this and what transducer do I need to do it?

Which model HELIX 5 did you get don3778?

Pros for any model would be that you will be getting 2D sonar information from the location that you are fishing and not some 10 to 20 feet to towards the back end of the boat. Cons would be that you would not have the HELIX 5 unit at the console where you may need it while making a run in your boat or when quickly scouting out new fishing locations.

Parratt, I have the 899 and love it! I bought the model with the standard transducer (I think they all come with the standard) and then I bought the HD transducer for the unit. This way I have two transducers and I put the HD ducer on the stern and one on the bow on my Motorguide TM. Since I do all my scanning while at the yoke I use the HD to my advantage and then when I locate a pile I drop the TM and unplug the unit from the back an move it up front and plug it into a separate set of power and ducer cables. (bought the extra power cable as well for the unit to move up front).
Most people buy the 899 and send in the non HD ducer and exchange it for the HD for a fee of about $90. But to buy the HD out right was only $100 more than just exchanging it so I opted to buy.
Once I get my next unit I may get another 899 or compatible one with the ducer I already have or get another HD ducer. I will wait to see.
Yes it is a lot of work sometimes (you have to get two mounts as well which adds up) but I figure I can handle this until I find some money somewhere!
    Hope this helps.

Greg, I got the Helix 5 si/gps. I'll be using it to find my own tops that I have a good idea where they are so therefore I am really wanting to use on the front. The salesman was trying to tell me that I couldn't tell anything about anything since I would be turning the trolling motor!
