He could be right don3778, but that really depends on how well you understand the Si sonar and how much you turn the trolling motor. Experienced Si sonar users don't have a problem with this. Just be patient and use it around some structures that you already know what they are and where they are. Use the trolling motor at different speeds and with/without turning the trolling motor as you pass them. Use them as a training tool and then get out on the lake a scout some more Crappie holes - but remember to post pictures of your success!

It also depend on how you are going to mount the unit at the bow. By using a mount system like a RAM mount you could buy two mount bases for it and not have to buy the Humminbird GM-2 Gimbal Mount.

Let me know how you want to proceed and I can get you a parts list of what you will need.
I think a ram mount seems like the way to go. Those part lists would be awesome! See, I am already feeling good about my Bird decision!

This way I have two transducers and I put the HD ducer on the stern and one on the bow on my Motorguide TM. Since I do all my scanning while at the yoke I use the HD to my advantage and then when I locate a pile I drop the TM and unplug the unit from the back an move it up front and plug it into a separate set of power and ducer cables. (bought the extra power cable as well for the unit to move up front).
Most people buy the 899 and send in the non HD ducer and exchange it for the HD for a fee of about $90. But to buy the HD out right was only $100 more than just exchanging it so I opted to buy.
Once I get my next unit I may get another 899 or compatible one with the ducer I already have or get another HD ducer. I will wait to see.
Yes it is a lot of work sometimes (you have to get two mounts as well which adds up) but I figure I can handle this until I find some money somewhere!
    Hope this helps.
That makes a lot of sense for sure. I think that's the way ill go as well. Thank you!

    - XHS-9-HDSi-180-T High-Def Side Imaging transom mount transducer
    - PC-11 Power Cable
    - 540233-1 Cable Connector Collector for 800/900ci Series units. This will have to be ordered straight from the Humminbird Customer Service folks.
    - GM-2 Gimbal mount for all of the 800/900 series units. This is only needed if you do not go with a RAM type mount. If you do use a RAM type mount, do not forget to buy the second mounting base for it.

According to the website, the 899 and 859 both come with the standard transducer, the xnt 9 si 180 t or the xnt 9 di t. The upgrade is to the high def transducer, the hdsi. You have to upgrade to get the hdsi according to everything I can find and per Brian at BBG Marine.

And the XHS-9-HDSi-180-T that Greg listed is not for the 899 according to the Humminbird website, so I think he was listing this for the guy with the 1198?

The 899 comes stock with the XNT 9 SI 180 T ... This was one of the cost cutting factors that's allowed the 899 price to be so much lower than the 898 ...

Greg's parts list would be for parratt1 (the OP).... Who was inquiring about a second station for his soon to be purchased 899 ...
