    Default Adjusting si settings

Bought a 798 with compact trans. Took it out today to give it A try. Looked good but want to get the most out of it. Baitfish everywhere but couldn't find any brush or much structure at all. What's some good settings to start out at. I live in sc and the lakes ain't to muddy right now. Here's some screenshots from today

FRST OF ALL ,GET YOUR SIDE DISTANT TO NO MORE THAN 60 TO 75 FEET ON SMALL UNIT.NOW AS YOU GO OVER A AREA YOU LIKE,HIT CURSOR AND STOP MACHINE,THEN HIT MENUE AND THEN ADJUST IT UP AND DOWN TILL YOU LIKE THE SETTING,THEN GO TO ANOTHER SPOT AND DO THE SAME,AND AS FOR SEEING BRUSH PILES THAT ARE NOT IN WATER COLUMN,THEY CAN BE HARD TO SEE IF THEY ARE OLD,YOU WILL NEED TO TRAIN YOUR EYES TO LOOK FOR A LITTLE WHITE WITH A SHADOW BEHIND IT,MANY TIMES IT WILL BE THERE BUT UNTRAIN EYES WILL OVER LOOK IT,PRACTICE,PRACTICE,PRACTICE IS NO SUBSITUTE FOR IT,GO WITH OTHERS WHO HAVE SI ,DOES NOT MATTER WHAT BRAND

*Beam Frequency 200kHz ...unless you want to see echoes from farther than directly under the boat ...then use 83kHz or 200kHz/83kHz ...(you can set the "Transducer Select" menu under the Sonar tab to "Dual Beam" to eliminate the 2d pixelation issue but you won't have SI or DI images until you set it back to "SideScan")...

*Switchfire Clear for depth less than 10ft ... and adjust Sensitivity up to an acceptable amount of clutter on the screen ...
*Switchfire Max for depth more than 10ft ... and adjust Sensitivity down to an acceptable amount of clutter on the screen ...

*Noise filter under Sonar tab to "Off" unless there is RFI showing on the display ...

*Max Depth under Sonar tab to 10ft deeper than any water you may be in ...

*SI Sensitivity up to brighten screen ...
*SI Sensitivity down to darken screen ...

*SI Contrast 10-12 ...adjust up to make structure echoes more visable ...

*SI Sharpness Off ... adjust up to make fish echoes more visable ...

*Chart Speed higher for 2d ... Match boat speed for SI/DI ... (No..there is no separate Chart Speed for each at the same time ... Darnit!!!...)...

*Palette choice to suit your eyes ... Blue for cloudy days - Green or Inverse for sunny days ...

Like Gene said ... Shorter "SI Range" ... 50-70ft (sometimes less for enlarging structure images of stuff closer to the boat)...

Put a waypoint on anything that looks out of place in the SI image ... And then re-position the boat to scan that waypoint closer to the boat ...

Thanks a lot great info. I was gonna ask why the 2d looked like that.

The 2d pixelation issue is/was a HB management decision ...(good for some - not so good for others)...

83 khz issue from a little "birdie"

It is what it is ...

Shutting off the 83kHz helps some ...but ...

The best workaround to date (from user's experiences and HB's recommendation) is to set the "Transducer Select" menu to "Dual Beam" and use the unit strictly as a 2d unit when using 2d ...

I would have to defer to Greg on the 385 because I don't know the pin configuration of the cable connector ...

But using the AS SIDB Y cable and any other 2d xducer will not eleviate the 2d pixelation issue ...

The pixelation issue is a "conflict of interest" between the SI processing and the 2d processing ...

The recommended "Dual Beam" setting shuts off all the SI (and DI) processing ... So the "conflict of interest" is null ...Leaving the 2d to work without issue ...
