Here's a couple photos of the pre-Ky Dam site from the air....

This is the proposed dam site from the South looking North...(you can see the tip of "27 mile island" in the lower right)...

For those who have access to a Ky Lake paper map or the Navionics East region card..."27 mile island" can still be seen in the lake bottom topography of KY Lake just to the south of the turbines and the first several gates...

This is the same "27 mile island" in the photos above...

In the top image looking north just down river from the left bend was my Grandfathers place, he was probably following an old mule around somewhere there when the photo was taken.

When I was a kid there was a bunch of horse drawn equipment sitting around on his farm, even until I was in my 20's. I could've got any or all of it, proves how smart I'm not. The river bottoms on that farm were over 1 mile long and close to a 1/2 mile at their widest part. I can't imagine walking that behind a mule, but he did. We farmed it and it seemed it took forever to get from one end to the other on a tractor. When my Grandfather was in his 70 he could still work most men in the ground. Early to bed and early to rise.

    I don't think it's water ricky...

That pic would have been taken somewhere around 1937...before the dam construction was started in 1938...

From Google Earth...it almost looks to be about where Jim Smith Construction is ...and it doesn't look like that area is far enough away from the river to be the startings of (Clyde) Reed's Crushed Stone...

It is my understanding that the concrete pillars that presently show in the river (below the dam)..at low river water levels ...are the concrete platforms that held the old railroad trestle seen in this pic...

That would put the dam construction just this side of the railroad trestle in the above pic...and constructing the dam right across the tip of "27 mile island" that shows in the lower right if the above pic...

I vaguely remember from the book that the narrow channel around "27 mile island" (also seen in the lower right of the above pic)...was widened to allow for diversion of the Tessesse River to begin "Stage 1" construction of the Lock and Powerhouse...
