If you only have 20 feet of water then you can narrow it down to only 15 feet from you and you can tell if it is rigrt under you by looking as to where it starts, for instant,if a stump at the bottom of it is at the top of bottom coverage you are right over it but if it starts below the top of bottom then it is that much to one side and if it is way down to the top of bottom it is much to left or right,i agree to others that it is a detail to the 2d and helps give a pic to see what 2d is showing and as for reading from top to bottom it would not be as easy to read for it would look side ways, sounds like you need si or learn your di better

Here's what DI looks like "sitting still" :

And if you didn't know better, you might confuse that screen for a 2d rendering, since in either case you're going to get elongated lines across the screen.

I'd much rather look down at my screen & see this :

I don't get those elongated lines, though I don't anchor much. If i do I use 2D, would not think DI would be worth while anchored. I have great results, shell cracker fishing using the 2D to find suspended fish owing in and out of feeding areas.

I think you need a lowrance unit with GPS.
    1 run over it
2 click , go to cursor
3 go back, look again, put way point on it
4 be frustrated why you can't catch fish on such a great looking tree

See, now that's what I don't understand about all the love for 2d
I mean, I hear people saying they like DI because it helps them interpret what the blobs & blotches are, of the 2d image WAIT ... SAY WHAT ?? If you're using the DI image to tell you what you're seeing on the 2d image .... then what do you need the 2d image for, in the first place ??
You're going at this backwards IMHO .... To me, that's like taking a Disney animation film (Down Image) and running it next to a stick figure cartoon (2d) ... just so you know what the stick figure cartoon is supposed to be about, and how it should look.

Pappy, this what I like about 2D:: Seeing the fish come up, look, hit, or go back down. I just can't get this kind of image on DI. I missed this one the second time he looked at it.

I use 2d about 1% now that I have a good down image. Fish near trees is what Im looking for. Not blobs in blobs

Maybe if you had been paying more attention to the rod/line, and not watching the DF, you might have caught that fish
You do know that there's a little bit of lag time, between seeing the 2d lines move and your reaction time to set the hook (when you're not watching rod or line) ... and that lag time gets a little longer, and our reaction time a little slower, as we get "older" !!
