    Default 997 si

I called humminbird today and told them my unit has a ring around the screen (I guess from the sun) and it would shut off or turn on without anyone near it
They told me it would need to come in for service and that unit has a flat rate service fee of $489.85
That's 1/4 of what the unit cost new and I ask if there was another option they said no that they do not have a atherized service center

Not only does it cost a arm and leg to buy if it needs any work it will cost a left nut to get it fixed if it needs work

I can buy the i-pilot upgrade for my terova cheaper than I can get my graph looked at by the people who made it

Why in the name of everything good and holy would it cost almost $500 to get them to check out my graph

because their techs are to busy trying to fix all the other units that are having problems lol

they have yet to get a fix out for the 1198 si and I'll bet we don't see one, with all the problems they are having with this new onx that I have read about its time t consider other options

500$ is over top and would be a deal breaker

go ahead and climb on my back all you bird fans, but its wrong and you know it

You are talking about repairing a unit that is anywhere between 5 to 7 years old. Apparently, they have to replace the entire front screen panel as well as get inside the unit to see what is causing it to turn itself on and off. I sold my 997 back around 2010 and bought a 998. I had to repair the screen before I sold it and they charged me something like $260 flat fee to replace the front screen panel which had the film coming off the upper left corner of the screen. Guess their fees have risen since then.

FWIW, Lowrance doesn't have a repair center so a unit in need of repair is SOL. They will allow you to upgrade to the newer model and give you, in effect, a trade-in allowance. Not sure what the end result would be compared to buying a new unit but I'm guessing the "net" difference is well above $489.85 for a Lowrance unit equivalent to the HB 997/998.

Any idea what it would cost to get a 6 year old flat screen TV repaired?

The screen is just cosmetic ..... not a real problem
It turning on and off is a problem

I can get a 32" tv for $300 soo.... $500 for a small screen is bs
So the TV comparison is out

Unfortunately unlike some I can't afford to upgrade ($2200) when they come out with a new unit I like ..... wish I could but I cant

What I do expect is not to wind up palms down on a desk when I need to get the unit I did pay $2200 for repaired ..... but that's just how I feel everyone is entitled to there on opinion

I do understand that if I want my unit repaired thats what i am going to have to pay and no matter what I say its not gonna help but I warn all those with a 997si
If it needs to be checked out by a doctor prepair yourself its gonna hurt $$$$

Don't take that $300 TV out in the rain......or out in the sun and try to see the picture.

I understand you are ticked off at the cost, but with the prices on the new 999's I'd seriously consider a new unit instead of fixing one that is well behind in terms of the current technology.....and you would have a few spare parts.

It's a tough situation. With Humminbird you have a choice of scrapping it or paying $500 for a repair. I know Lowrance won't repair older units, and I doubt Garmin or Raymarine will fix units 5 to 7 years old either. I will say you should do some trouble shooting on your own. A bad power source might cause your problems. Get a good 12V battery and wire your unit directly to it with a fuse of course. Then see if it still acts up.
