Default Best Down Image for Still Fishing.

Looking for unit to use when still fishing. Do a lot of night fishing tied to structure. Presently using a flasher unit which does provide good info on fish but not much on structure.

Thinking I would like to modernize " my sitting still " setup.Humminbird 1198 is my main finder. Humminbird instructs that DI needs to be moving for accurate readings. My attempts to use the 1198 as my sit still set up proves them right on this.

Anyone have suggestions that might prove to be better. Not married to any one manufacturer. Just looking for something that will give me good image for sit still conditions. Units will not be on at same time. So no worry about crosstalk and interference.

    That's why I'm looking at the 360, it's pricey but I sit over structure a lot .

I use a split screen of DI and 2D when sitting on a spot. Works for me, however I am wanting a 360 but waiting on BamaS to buy one first!! I really think the 360 will be the way to go.

While sitting still...Sonar (2d/SI/DI) is going to display structure as solid lines scrolling across the screen...

This is because sonar is not a camera looking down into the water....

Sonar is repetitive sound pulses (pings) sent thru the water ...and then the returning echoes (in the individual pings) are plotted onto the screen in a strip 1 pixel wide...then the next ping data is plotted onto the screen in a strip 1 pixel wide...."pushing" the previous ping data's single strip of pixels into the sonar "history" across the screen...

It is this pinging, plotting, stacking (of the thin strips of echo information on the image) .... That builds the sonar image on the screen...and creates the "scrolling" effect seen we see in 2d...SI...or DI....

If there is structure in the sonar beam at "x" feet away from the xducer...the unit will repetitively "Paint" that echo at the same pixel in the scrolling image over and over and over....creating a solid line at that "x" feet in the image...

This is not to say that structure cannot be descerned in a stationary position...it merely means sonar is not going to "paint a brushpile looking brushpile" sitting still...(with the exception of 360 and maybe the new SpotlightScan from Lowrance)...

rnvinc is correct ... and here's a picture describing exactly what he said :

Taken over a brushpile, and you can see by the 000mph that I was basically "sitting still" (though I wasn't actually tied up/anchored).

Sounds like, to me, that you want to see a down image picture quality rendering of what the cover looks like ... and in constant real time. Not going to happen with SI, DI, or 2d sonar. There must be "movement" for the image to change ... either the boat, or a moving transducer sweeping the area (like the 360 or Spotlightscan).

Yep, not gonna happen. You must be moving. If you are fishing brush just ride over it, check for fish, if they are there fish it, if not move on.

Well that makes up my mind for me. Guess I will stay with the flasher. Aware of the 360 but consider 1500-2000 dollars a lot for basically a moving transducer.
Would love to play with that technology but have to draw the line somewhere.

I am happy with my Humminbird 385ci DI with rotating for 180 degree DI transducer. Sitting still on the ice I know exactly that my hooks are between those two stones, and the fish is 10 feet left:

yes it is alot of money but either the spotlight or 360 would do what your asking

I do not think so: neither 360 nor spotlight will show you what is directly under you, you will see a big dark hole about two depths wide instead, no hooks, no structure under you, even flasher is better in this case IMHO.
Actually 360 and spotlight are using 360 degree Side imaging scanning, and it is effective after 1.3-1.5 depths from the point where you are, but I use 180 degree Down imaging scanning and it is the most effective right under you and up to 1-3 depths aside.
