They were made both ways, the hd units will have hd spelled out on the sd card cover

HD in depth finders is misunderstood as screen image quality...

HD is the HB units is denoted to mean differences in the unit's features from some years to the next upgrade unit....

*The HD moniker was added the 700 series units to indicate that the HD models were Ethernet compatible...
*The HD moniker was added to the 800 series units to indicate that the 800 models were LED backlight screen...
*The HD moniker was added to the 900 series units to indicate that the 900 models were LED backlight screen...
*The HD moniker will be added to the 2014 1100 series units ...probably to indicate internal GPS antenna...

If you see an advertisement for a 1198 HD ...it's most likely a typo...I don't think any 1198 were made with the HD moniker....

HD (in the HB units) has never been applied to mean more pixels or better screen resolution than a non-HD model of the same series number...

I have an 1198hb and couldn't imagine the picture being better. for a better picture, with the way mine is set up, I need to idle at 4-6mph.

The 1198's all have the LED backlit screen that has a much wider range of brightness settings adjust-ability than the 1197 model they replaced.....There is only one model 1198.
