Default My new 998 hd si ???

Not so sure if i did the right thing. I fish Lake Dardanelle, Arkansas all the time. I have been out with the new toy several times and the unit itself does a great job, so far no probs except I can't find brush piles. I bet I have marked 50 potential brush piles just to go to them and find nothing. I haven't figured out yet what exactly I'm looking for on the screen. I have passed some piles I know are there just to see and there might be a little sqiggly looking something, but when you see my snaps you can see why there are millions of squiggly things. Picture#1 is a typical shot anywhere near a creek channel. picture# 2 is where I am crossing a submerged paved road and what I thought might be some brush to the left. But none there. Sometimes I think maybe there is so many fish showing up the beam can,t get through the fish to get to the brush. Its got me scratching my head.
    Any fish here??

Someone who knows SI, please analyze this next shot. All i care about is finding brush. I have been fishing this lake since 1965 and have caught hundreds of limits of crappie, I just want to understand this new Hummer so I can find new places. Thanks

Ray, the last shot looks like fish. Lots and lots of fish. The larger white returns may be some kind of structure, but a person may need to zoom in to see for sure. One thing is for sure. There are lots of fish in all those pics. I'm sure the real experts will chime in before long. We fished the Clarksville end, and there wasn't a whole lot of structure in the bay we fished. I'll go back and see if I have any pics from there.

you're not trying to see the brush with the downscan feature I hope.
just use the si to mark brush.
you may not have scanned any good piles yet

set the range to about 3 times the depth. maybe just look to one side. will do wonders couldn't that be brush on the road on the left of #2?? something is casting a shadow there.
Crappie bite twice a day. 15 minutes before I get there and 10 minutes after I leave.

I don't see any brush shadows in any of your shots...(lots of fish tho...)

Here is an example of the shadows you should be looking for...
(the first shot is the actual screenshot...the 2nd is explainations of the same shot)...

Place waypoints on brush piles (in the SI image)...at the exact spot on the lake bottom where the structure touches the shadow...

Then reposition the boat to slowly pass over the waypoint watching the split screen Sonar/Chart...
(Be sure "Beam Frequency" under the "Sonar" tab is set to 83/200 to get the wider 60° 83kHz sonar cone)...

If the brush does not show up in the Sonar view...switch back to SI and see if you missed the brush left or right (and mark another waypoint on the SI image...)

Like Brett mentioned...DI in the HB SI units is "lacking", at best...you will have better luck spotting brush on the SI and then verifying the brush with the 2d...

Thanks for the advice and hello RCC. Right away I learned that the DI was of little to no help to me. On that roadbed shot, I did check out what I thought was brush but it wasn't. Rickie your post was a lot of help, thanks for the time and trouble. I think that 3 times depth is a good rule so I will be trying that next time out. The next shot is about the closest I have that resembles yours. I can't remember if I found brush in it or not. I think it has some in it. The next one is a 2d and DI comparision. I like the 2d better. I'll get the hang of it. The key is to keep using it.

The 2d looks like brush whereas the DI looks like a little turbulence.

Ray, here is a pic from Lake Nimrod. Buncha stumps with a few fish thrown in. This was recorded on a 798 and viewed in Deepview. You can roll the cursor over to your target and see the GPS coordinates on the bottom left.

This was a shot I had Sat. in DI/SI. Just getting started as well with my unit but these guys have given a ton of tips that really helped me with the learning curve and hope to learn more.

After making changes...going over a target...making changes ect, I was able to find the settings that gave me what I felt I should be looking at. The best part about it is: To learn it, means we get to go out on the water and fish

Why wouldn't he want to use the downscan to see the brush? I use it all the time, with downscan you can see the brush and actually see fish in the brush. With sonar, you just see the red/yellow return from the brush and it is impossible to tell if fish are actually in the brush.

    My sentiments, exactly, SYG

Exactly why I don't miss 2d sonar !!! My E5DSI is downscan only ... and I look at it waaaaay more than I ever looked at my previous 2d DF's !!
