Default Which Fishfinder do you use?

My 20 year old Humminbird Wideview has died, so now I need to purchase a new fishfinder. Since my main quarry is crappie I figured I would ask my follow fisherman what they use and or recommend. Thanks in advance for your advise.

I'd recommend going to the BPS, Cabelas, whatever store you have close and take a look at what's out there VS. what you really want.. opinions are like ****, everyone has one. Get the unit you believe serves you best for your methods of fishing.

Same as asking what boat or car people would recommend. As for motorcycles, I'd recommend HD because it's the only MC I believe exists. I'd buy and Ultra Classic or UC cvo if I were you! Enjoy

The technology over the last ten years or so is overwhelming to say the least. It has improved by leaps and bounds. In 2001 I had a LCX16 from Lowrance. It had a big screen (for the time) full color (first one I believe) and GPS. We used it for Underwater Recovery because of the playback options and being able to save information on a SD card. When the I-40 bridge collapsed here in Oklahoma in 2001 we had to have a Coast Guard Cutter come in to have access to side scan. Now all of the above features are just about standard now even on less expensive units, not to mention HD, and side scan, ect. I would get with a sales rep that knows what they are talking about and get the best thing you can for your budget and your needs. I happen to like Lowrance but I have a history with them from the dive teams. Some folks like Hummingbird. Nothing wrong with either one. I remember the Lowrance tag had a "lower end" brand called Eagle. I am not sure if they are still around as the Eagle I have is still good. You may want to look into the "secondary" brands of the big names and see if you can get what you want in them for a little less money. I mean why buy a Lincoln SUV when you can get a Ford Expedition with all of the options for less and they are basically the same car. Just some things to think about. Hope this helps, Bobo

Like BoBo I have a old Eagle 500C on trolling motor that still works great and just installed a Humminbird 998. I like both. Like Duncan said hands on at the counter will help. In just plain 2d I don't think you could beat the Garmin 500 or 550c. Figure out your budget first then look at units in that range. Pick a couple then ask questions. Plenty of people on here will have experience with about anything you chose. My recommendation is Color screen and GPS either brand and you should be happy.
By the way Duncan just got rid of my FLH. If I could I would go back to my 1987 FXLRC. Best bike I ever owned.

Call Brian at BBG Marine and pick his brain, he won't steer you wrong. I'm sure any of any of the other board sponsors can help you too.

I have and like my Humminbird 1198 at the console and up front I still have a Lowrance X 125 which I have been thinking about changing it out with one of the two brands with Down Imaging. Don't think I really need side scan in front, but still want the Down Imaging and probably. 7" screen which is the same size as what I have now.

First know your budget, then think hard about what you want to get out of it, and then see what is out there that does what you want for that price.
