Default HB & Lowrance question-I might be lost

I have read that the GRP-HS & the Point 1 should be mounted as close to the front of the boat as possible for heading purposes.

What if you have your transducer on the stern? Wouldn't that make any WP you mark 17-20 feet off?

Also, it seems like both pick up RF more than a regular antenna. We have enough problems already

Finally, can you use them without having the Heading sensor activated? I see there are updates for the Point 1. I usually keep my eyes open when I fish.

I think the HS might be helpful for off shore

No Don ,it won,t hurt your waypoint as long as you know where you have it mounted, just might see it before transducer pick it up

I'm not sure about the Point 1 but the AS GPS HS antenna from HB has an "indicator" arrow marked on the puck with directions to mount the antenna with the "indicator" arrow pointed toward the front of the boat....(this orients the compass in the puck with the bow of the boat)...

Is this maybe what you read Don...?

(and I don't think the heading sensor in the HB HS can be turned off...if it's connected and the correct software version is loaded, the heading sensor is "active"...)

Rickie, this is just one of the posts that I read:

I have found my HB units to be so accurate most days I wouldn't want the GPS puck anywhere but close to the transducer whether it be bow or stern. If you aren't putting it on the bow why have one? At least in the HB units the GPS shipped with it works fine for normal operation.

To try and make myself clear; I am a crappie fisherman that fishes brush & docks. I always use marker buoys. My TD is mounted on the stern & it makes sense to me to have the Antenna in the back, as close to my TD as possible so I won't be constantly subtracting or adding to find the BP.I care zero about an arrow pointing to a WP on my screen. I just don't see it being as accurate as a marker buoy.

I am receiving the Point 1 as a rebate item. I like the idea of an external antenna because my HB worked well with the regular GRP Precision Module(non HS). All I need to know is that the GRP-HS & Point 1 will work as a regular antenna?

Yes it will work as a regular GPS antenna...(just as with any GPS antenna - the closer it is mounted to the xducer, the more accurate the waypoint will be when trying to return to that waypoint)...

(And I have read that the Point 1 can be configured as a heading sensor only and still use the 3000 or 4000 for GPS...)

This is not possible with the AS GPS HS antenna ...GPS and heading sensor are both active when in use...

My tests showed the AS GPS HS antenna as accurate as the earlier HB AS GR50 ...but not as accurate as the AS GRHA...

I do not know about the accuracy of the Point 1 ...but I would guess its very comparable to the HB AS GPS HS antenna ...

Don, yes it will, and it's a good one too. You may have to select it as your GPS source. Rickie is right, there is an arrow the points to the bow of the boat.

I posted this a couple weeks ago. http://www.crappie.com/crappie/fishi...s-antenna.html

I mounted mine where I already had the one before mounted and that is the right rear maybe 7' or so from where my 1198 is on the console. It works just fine! I just pointed the little arrow forward and it would just as it should.

You can run multiple antennas on the Low. Just pick the one you want at the head unit. You have choices. Yor can select to use the internal or the external at the head unit. Igps or Point 1.
