Be wary Greg, Mike is a master of subliminal messaging. You WILL be buying Lowrance if you're not careful!!
Actually, after giving him grief, I backed off and said good questions.
I didn’t think that he was bashing Stymie. By using fewer parts in the units and transducers we are able to keep the cost down. Not having those same parts means that there are fewer features in the units. It’s basically the same thing that another company did with a whole brand line of sonar products not many years ago and a strategy that many companies still use.

I'm waiting for the Lowrance paid employee to get on here and answer all the questions. after all, Lowrance units are so hard to understand...
Maybe Tom is paid for what he does.
While I certainly am a Humminbird employee; this is not one of the job requirements that I have. I post on these boards when I have the time to do so (or even do so from home). Right now I am waiting for a 9:00 AM meeting to start…
I also had the same problem deciding between the 2 units, for me the 598 is the way to go. One question I have is I don't fish deep water. Typically 4-6 foot water depth and on rare occasion 8'-10' with that being said will SI work in shallow water? Are there any limitations I will be faced with?
The Humminbird SI is excellent in shallow water because of the wide beam angle. I would stick to the 455KHZ in the 4-6 foot range.
Thanks BobB, Just have to finish saving for it.
Hi everyone,
this is my first post on this forum. I'm shopping for the 598 too. Wondered how many use it here and what success it gives (doesn't give)? Also, I saw it for $499 at Academy Outdoors I think it is online. Anyone know anything about this place?
Thanks for any replies
I have not ordered from Academy, but have see others post good things about them. I think they are a very reputable dealer.
