The fish seen in the water column area of the first image will not be shown in the second image because that distance from the transducer is not shown in the second image.
Sonar can only show how far away some object is that the sonar bounced (reflected) back off of. In the first image it looks like the bottom was from about 18 to a little over 20 feet deep (I’m guesstimating here), so when the Contour Mode was turned on it eliminates the water column which also eliminates all of the sonar readings from that same distance (about 18 to 20 feet depending on where in the image you are talking about). This means that any object that reflected sonar that are also within that same distance from the transducer will also be eliminated from being shown on the displayed sonar.

Did you make two passes on this same structure or were these images taken from a Sonar Recording? I ask because the baitfish school that arrookie was asking about would have already scrolled off of the display when you made the second image.
