Did you have any current ? If TVA is not moving water the bite will be off. Were you fishing right behind a low pressure system ? The fish may be in the creek but they will be closer to river channel.

No, I didn't filet the crappie. I sure thought about it though. The gills were red. I was in the middle of cleaning a bunch of fish, so it was easy to pass on this one.
