If you're firing a gun you should ALWAYS know what is in the direction you're shooting. That's the first thing I was taught on firearm safety. Hopefully there aren't any accidents.

If possible I always have a couple rods rigged with different baits. This allows for different presentations fairly quickly. Plus what works at one location doesn't always work at another.
