Same here in Abalama...hard to beat a Dollar Store dog for catching big gills, especially on a 35 degree morning! Last two days they wouldn't touch a nymph under a bobber but slammed the dogs...

I do the same thing but instead of the "water bobber" I just use a small weighted float to get the nymph out there. Bead head nymphs also do really well. Stop n go retrieve seems to work best for...

FWIW, my fave 'gill, 'cracker, and crappie rods are 8' crappie jigging rods...for me, they handle casting or lobbing both bait and lures, do well on any size panfish (my "home" pond has coppernose up...
