Muddy water is usually a no no. Light stain, yes. Muddy, no. I have tried it and gabowman is right, nearly zero light penetration. Long story short, I only tried once and got skunked that night :)

I like the Garmin 160-180 series, cheaop price and work great for your average fishing conditions. Can add GPS to the newer model I believe.

I look for deep water next to a large flat or drop off. Creek channels near deep water work great also. I usually set up in at least 25ft of water and pull lines at 6-14ft. Hope this helps, If not...
