Gizzard shad are the only shad in Mark Twain....
Gizzard shad are the only shad in Mark Twain. They spawn from late April to mid June. Sometimes we see more than one spawning peak but that does not necessarily mean that an individual female spawns...

I think you are seeing colonies of freshwater bryozoans. Very common in several area lakes. No reason to be concerned.
