I don't know about raising them, but I keep 60-70 dozen alive all winter in well water. No chess, no water changes, just a airstone. As long as the water is cold(under 50*), they do good.

Same deal for us, I didn't find a single fish (crappie) on the machine sat or Sunday. The ones we did catch we right in the bushes, right on the bank, 2-3' FOW.
