I think you just answered your own question, bugs, smaller fish mostly. Smaller fish is the first, bugs second. There is no food item that I know of that "only" Specks eat (the same for other fish)...

Yep. Good conditions help for sure. Too much wind or no wind is bad news for Specks here. I try to go on days where there is a 5 to 10 mph wind. Not only is the paddling easier, the fish bite better....
