My thought is that a shorter rod is helpful, because sometimes you are in close proximity to lifts/boats and anything else, and if your rod is too lomg it will be hinderance. I think 5'-6" is best.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to make that one (actually I'm pretty sure I won't), but I'll keep watching for the next one.

I would say trace every inch of the dock with a jig, inside and out. There doesn't necessarily have to be brush for a dock to have fish on it too.
