I believe it’s a lady fish
At first I thought it was a bass but I’m not sure. Any ideas? Caught of the NJ coast.

It was strange because he was in a school of bluefish and those guys are bloodthirsty... might be a herring though I’ll do some digging

if it was in a school of bluefish it was probably a food item , bluefish are the ultimate bad boys off the coast of NJ for sure .
i used to live up that way and we had a large boat docked in ocean city and ran off shore quite often .
a bluefish bit the tip tip off my finger one day when i tried to get my lure back out of it and i never forgot that mean thing .

Yeah man no doubt! I had one grab me and refuse to let go I almost needed stitches, thankfully he was just a snapper, but iv been surfing and seen them and I get OUT! I don’t even get out for sharks most of the time but bluefish? NO THANKS!
We have a boat in LBI that we take offshore quite often, tuna and mahi, and inshore for stripers, flounders, tog, weakfish and it’s a blast. Love those huge schools of bigger blues! Nonstop action!
Have a great day!

Not 100% sure, but looks like a Alosa mediocris to me.
