TX-LA Coast for 1st time

Wife, Kids and I are wanting to head down south on their spring break. I want to do some saltwater fishing, which I have never done. Can anyone give me any ideas for where would be good fishing from the shore/piers/jettys? I will bring gear, but wont pull a boat.
Any good bait/tackle shops in area would be a plus also.

The only 2 places I can think of right off the bat that you can fish from piers would be the Jetty pier in Cameron, La or at Calcasieu point which is a little further north than the north end of calcasieu lake (located south Lake Charles, La). If you are after bigh fish, the jetty pier would be a better bet. Calcasieu point does have some good crabbing at times. As far as stores, there is Academy and Lake Charles tackle in Lake Charles, LA. Just ask one of the guys in either store what they are catching on at the time, but a good bet for fishing from shore would just be plain old bait shrimp fished on the bottom. Bring plenty of jig heads though, YOU WILL HANG UP! Good luck and let us know how you do.

Shadow, i appreciate it. I had planned a trip the week before to Toledo Bend, but then we decided to do this. What might a man expect to catch on the bait shrimp/jig heads?
