Rod cleaning question

Broke a custom made rod I use for steelhead. I have a couple older rods I can use but they are grimy/dirty. What is the best method to clean them? Also, how would I check the guides to make sure there are no nicks or weak spots?

Don’t know best way of cleaning rods but I just wipe them down with windex or something like that. I check guides with a Q-tip and make sure it doesn’t snag anywhere.

Before fishing season begins (after deer season ends HA!) I just use a bit of Purple Power and a rag to clean my rods and this is the time I also clean & lube my reels. Ive never noticed nicks in the eyes.

My dirty rods were given to me when my brother in law passed away. He absolutely wore out the fish and never cleaned his boat or equipment. This is layers of grime, guts, and bait juices that have baked in the sun!

You could give denatured alcohol a try. Isopropyl alcohol 90% could work too but I haven’t used the latter so not sure if it would work well.

I’ve cleaned a lot of stuff with Dawn dish detergent. If the item is a bit damp first it seems to work a bit easier. Also, the scotch brite looking green scrubbers from dollar tree aren’t near as abrasive as the real deal and I also use them on some of the stubborn stuff. On the cork I scrub as best I can and sand some of the. Stained cork off but not much. I then tape off the hardware and spray with polyurethane and wipe off the excess. Keeps them from getting dirty again so soon. Hope this helps.
