I am starting on the guides now that the decorative wrap and name weave are done. There are several things to consider when wrapping guides. For this rod it will be used to dip jigs near brush at times so I don't want bright colors on my thread or gold colored guides. I have chosen black guides so that there will be no shine or sparkle to be seen by the crappie. I am also reversing my thread color scheme. On the diamonds, red was the dominate color. For my guides black will be the dominate color with a red under wrap. Some red will be seen but it will not be prominent.
Some people will say that an under wrap for the guides is not necessary. That is fine with me but for any that I build there will be an under wrap on the guides so that the guide feet will not scratch the rod thereby weakening the blank.
Another consideration for spinning guides is to get a couple of bands of thread on the tip end of the guide. I will have plenty of pics to show what I mean. I will as I have been doing showing only one pic per post so that they can be zoomed in on if need be. The reason for a couple of wraps on the tip end is so that a spinning guide can never come loose and come out of the wrap. I have many times in my life seen production spinning rods with guides missing because the became loose and simply fell out. I will detail only 2 guides as showing all of them will be a bit redundant.
Concerning thread; I have always purchased 1 lb spools. The thread is cheaper that way and by now it is not possible for me to use up all that I have, I do however also have many standard spools of thread. I usually transfer some thread from a 1 lb spool to a standard spool so that it will fit easily on my thread carriage. I know that most thread carriages come with a bushing to make a 1 lb spool fit but it is my experience that the extra weight of the 1 lb spool of thread will cause the silicon rollers on the thread carriage to wear prematurely.
