Fishing on a full moon???

I went to a small lake I have been fishing since I was 12(a loong time ago) At my age its all about getting to go and not about catching, Getting to enjoy the outdoors and surveying what has been provided by God. I hear others talking about "the full moon" and what a good time to fish. NOT ME. I like dark nights and have had my best luck when fishing on them. I caught a few(21) but they bit kind of funny. Lost a big bass that broke my 2 pound test line when he went around a stump. No matter I would have released it anyway. Hard to break that 2 pound test if the drag is set right. Beautiful day and I got to get out and ward off, what ever fisherman get this time of the year......Hope everyone has good luck and enjoys each trip, never know when the last trip will be ("the last trip").............Have Fun.....crappie1133

I do night crappie fishing out here in California too. Only night fished twice so far this year and all other crappie fishing trips have been during the day. I hate full moon nights too. It feels like crappies have options to feed elsewhere away from my light. Here is my night fishing routine: locate structure in 6ft or deeper near highway channels, tie or anchor as best away from incoming night wind, drop my green LED light, wait for the bait fish to show up then crappies right after. It is almost a guaranteed limit if there is no moon out because they come to me. I don't have to go chasing them from tree to tree or brush to brush. However, I am getting too old and tired staying up late on the boat. Last two night trips, I fell asleep after 1 a.m. If I am feeding friends, I will make the night trip otherwise, I enjoy the day in the sun, the challenge of trying to figure them out, and coming home to my comfortable bed.

Can you provide info about your 'green LED light?' What is it, does it attract baitfish on that alone? What's it look like?

I do not like a full moon either. Seems as though the fish feed all night and don't bite good the next day.:twocents

I try not to fish full moon either.

I like to fish anytime I get a chance if there not biting so well still a good day I have had great days when I caught none . Heck I even had a pretty good day when my buddy caught 4 and I caught none but it was a little tougher than just none.

The last 2 years. I've had my best days on the full moon. Today was incredible.

I find the bite better on a full moon as well. I do LOTS of night fishing for crappie and have the best luck during both the full moon and new moon. Both are equally as good for me. I too use green LED lights secured around the edge of my boat and it draws in the baitfish. Lots of bugs too in summer...

Thanks for replying. I did see your old quoted post. But, how do you deploy this? Do you just hang it into the water? How? And how deep? Would love to hear more particulars, thanks.

Easy! As you can see in the photo, the LED lights are protected inside the tube. The way it's designed, the tube floats directly downward (NOT sideways) with the black wiring section floating on. It came with a separate rubber suction hook at the bottom just in case you want to hook weights to sink it deeper, but I don't need it and threw that piece away. It is the perfect, durable, and easy light to throw out next to your boat. The wires are also plenty long to move it around my 17.5ft ski/fish fiber glass. Lasted me a few years now and still working perfect. The sinking LED light is just less stress on your eyes when fishing at night. There is a lot of different crappie lights out there, just depends on your boat set up and personal preferences. Even a simple propane lantern hanging off the side of your boat is also effective too.

Where is best place to set up for night fishing, brush piles, creek channels. I've been wanting to try it, but don't know where to start.

You basically fish the same areas or spots you would during the daylight since the crappie are schooling fish and move from pile to pile. If there is wind then try fishing the wind blown shore as the bait fish are usually there following the wind blown plankton.

Thanks. I need to try it on some of the brush piles where I've been catching some post spawn fish.

What is the best season for fishing? I am new to fishing and want your guide on this. What necessary tools should i take along while going to fishing? Is fishing a good beneficial trade or not?

Fishing is definitely a beneficial trade! Not just the food side, but as a hobby. It is an excellent way to get youth outside and keep them involved in something besides the trouble they can find with peer pressures. As far as gear I would recommend hiring a guide to start and they will provide the gear. This will give you a chance to see if you like it before breaking the bank. First need to know where you want to fish and what species you want to chase?

crappielimits gives you excellent advice. Especially with the Guide recommendation. Better to spend a fw $ on a guide, than go hog wild and spend a bunch of $ on equipment you may not find the passion to continue to use. The key word in all the above is "passion".....Once you get "it", your done. Get the second mortgage ready, and find a good psychologist for both you and your wife/significant other. (She'll need it more than you).

Keep an open mind, learn from anybody you fish with, ask questions, and don't be afraid to think 'out side the crappie box". You never know what will work till it works. Hang on my friend....it's a wild and crazy ride. lol

Greenwing, I drew a picture to help you visualize where you can start night fishing under a light. My recommendation is that if you only fish in 6ft or less, use a small gas lantern instead. I custom homemade a bar to hang it off the side of my boat with a small metal sheet to reflect the light away from my eyes and into the water. The bad thing about gas lanterns are that they will attract annoying bugs. I also custom built in two small square LED lights off the side of my boat in which I can shine them into the water. LED attracts less bugs on the boat but still brings in the fish. Any deeper than 10ft, I use my green LED sinking crappie light. Just remember, night fishing takes time to build bugs=minnows/shad=crappies. Here in this picture, I use empty gallons of milk jugs to hang on my anchor rope so other night boaters can see my anchor line if they happen to come by. The last thing you want it someone coming by and snap your anchor line, completely throw you off your game. Good luck! Attachment 202139
