Default Gotta Get Into Painting Jigs

So I wanna get into painting my own jigheads. That being said what is the bare minimum that I need to purchase to get started? I can use the oven to bake 'em and I'll make some kind of rack to hang 'em on. I probably wont be painting more than a couple hundred a year for my personal use. 3 or 4 colors will be plenty for me getting started. Can I get into this without breaking the bank?!? What say you guys????

I would buy jig heads in packs of 100 and then the colors of powder paint you would like. Heat source could be almost anything but most probably use a heat gun. Somewhere to hang the jigs to cool and really that’s it. You don’t absolutely have to bake them afterwards although they would have a more durable finish if they were baked. I just stir the jar of powder paint to keep it loose and fluffy. Heat jig, dip and swirl in paint, hang to cool. Then if you want to, you can heat it to fully harden.

I know Ive read about fluid beds and the such but didnt wannt get into that to start with. I just didnt know if that was a necessity to begin with. Is one brand of paint better than another for a beginner? Where's the best place to order paint? Thanks for your reply. And yea, I do buy by the hundred. I used to buy painted that way but they are getting pretty expensive nowadays.

Pro-Tec is the paint I would recommend. Most of mine came from TJ’s Tackle. They have some videos also on their page.

Also, It's highly recommended NOT to bake them in an oven your going to use for food. You can get a low priced one at a second hand store or a low priced one in a dept store, like Walmart, target, etc. Other than that, I agree with the info Super Dave has provided.

Can the paint be cured well enough to stay on the jigs by heating them with a heat gun a few times? I'm assuming youre talking about a small toaster oven?

I’ve never tried baking using a heat gun. I imagine it would help some. Yes a small toaster oven is what I use. Bought the cheapest I could from Walmart.

Yes sir, I was. I use a heat gun to heat the jig head before dipping in the paint, and again if i didn't get it hot enough to make the powder paint shinny on the head. Then bake them. Yes, the paint will adhere to the jig with only the heat gun, but will come off faster from bumping under water structure without the baking. I also found, by attaching eyes, that coating with UV resin and curing that over the powder paint, it will stay on a lot longer.

No need to paint them unless your shooting docks are casting around rocks. You will lose the jig way before you knock of the paint. I have a small group of jig heads I bake due to I sometimes shoot docks. The vast majority I do not bake because it is a unnecessary step.
