Wheel weights aren't pure lead. They're hard lead and contain other metals like zinc, tin, antimony and others to help them hold their shape and not fly off. It still works OK but you might have to raise the temp if they don't fill all the voids and can be aggravating in the smaller sizes.

My local tire dealer wants $40 for a bucket of wheel weights. The local scrap dealer wants 0.30 per lb. Got to sort the lead, alloy, zinc, steel, trash and scrap before starting to cast ingots. The alloy does a pretty good job of casting sinkers and bullets. I hold onto the lead weights until a get a good amount. I clean out the high school ROTC pellet range room twice yearly. Along with the cadets helping it takes about 2 hours. With the lead wheel weights I get about 50 lbs of pure lead ingots. My last casting of pure pellets was 26 lbs. I sort out the zinc and cast large tractor weights. I cast ingots over a fire pit, no problem getting the heat up for lead and alloy. Have to get the fryer base out for the zinc.
