Would be nice if they gave us ice thickness reports daily now.
NOTICE: The Mahaney and Clark Recreation Areas are closed due to poor weather conditions.
NOTICE: The Chestnut Run Swim Beach Area is open for the winter season. A reminder that ice conditions are highly variable at Shenango Lake due to our flood control mission. The only way to be completely safe is to stay off the ice. Enjoy your time safely at Shenango Lake!

Yes, that would be nice for all the ice fishing people. Does it vary in thickness, from shallow water to deeper water? Have you ever noticed? Does Pymy ice up quicker than Shenango?
Thickness varies as you get closer to moving water or springs. They deteriorate the ice from underneath which makes it so much more unpredictable. Couple parts of Shenango Lake freeze quicker than other parts of the lake but with the COE pulling water, even those areas are unpredictable. Pymatuning doesn’t have the current like Shenango but they get snow on their ice which slows the ice making process. And that blanket of snow makes it even harder to read the ice. So I say, if you choose to chance early ice, wear and use all your safety gear. Even a pfd. I’ve been the first one on ice before. I used a spud bar, auger, and ruler to check ice every couple feet. If first hole isn’t at least over three inches, I go no farther. I may check a different area but most times I just go home and wait a little longer for it to get thicker. Some lightweight guys will fish that three inch ice. I’m not a lightweight. Always check the ice yourself, no matter how many people you see fishing on it.
