small gills

i have been to a small lake twice this year, both times i brought home fish to clean.my question is how can i catch bigger gills.i fish with popeyes and wax worms,and also tubes under a float.i am walking around the lake fishing in downed trees.i see pics of huge gills and i am lucky if i catch 10" gills.any help would be greatly appreciated.oh yeah i enjoy every outing just wonderin how to get a hold of the big uns.

If there are bigger ones in there, they are probably deeper. I have caught 1 lb. gills on occasion when fishing on the bottom for shellcrackers in 12-15 feet of water. may need a boat etc. to find the right spot.

hasn't really been nice enough for my 5 yr old to stay out on lake very long.so i haven't been able to get the boat out yet.still seems a bit early for any kind of spinners right now,at least for me anyway.we haven't been catching dinks just nothing to brag about.

Since you are a little north of me, I'd say they are still deep. I usually start catching the bigger ones when they start moving in shallow for the spawn, so it's a tad early for that.

I'd settle for 10" Bluegill any day, most of mine, here lately, have been about half that size. I'm hopeing as the water warms up, the larger ones will come closer to the banks.

A 10-inch bluegill is a pretty nice fish. But if you're catching small ones, move your jig and waxworm out about 3 feet deeper. That's been working for me lately.
