Thread: Nice NY Chain Pickerel Caught while Crappie Fishing 08/2008

Nice pike ! its been years since I caught one, use to catch them all the time down (NENC) here but they have vanished...........
They don`t get as big either ! nice catch ! thanks for posting pic

Nice Pic!! Biggest one I've seen in a while. Should have kept him and munched out, they do make good eating.

Don't know much about them but don't you need to know how to clean them to get out the Y bones? I have heard they are great eating. Back in my younger days in central GA., I'm 74, I use to catch and eat red-fin pike, don't know the real name but they were good, of course back then any fish we could eat was good, don't take me back to those good old days at least money wise, lots of other stuff was good, don't think we even had locks on the doors.

Thats a nice surprise while crappie fishing.I remember years ago the fishing would slow down and someone would catch a northern or muskie cruising around.

Thanks SteveJ and Baxter1 for your nice comments and yes it was quite a surprise to hook into him as I was hoping for a monster slab--took me close to 15 minutes to land him as I had to go real gentle on the drag as I had 4lbs line on. At one point, it dove under the boat and brought up a large dead tree branch (it went through the tangle of small limbs but didn't wrap me in them so I was still able to bring him in).

Yes, that is one fine and fun pickerel.
I got a nice 21 1/2"er over vacation a few weeks ago.
My son was in the boat with me and did a fine net job. :D
