Default Got the chace to go for a while yesterday

The Mrs. and myself had a rare quiet Saturday so we decided to see if we could find some more shell crackers. In my younger days I was obsessed with bass fishing mostly because that is what guys like Hank Parker and Bill Dance were telling me I should be on Saturday morning TV lol. I hunted those things relentlessly and honestly never got to be any good at it . One day standing one a creek bank at a friends house reeling some super nice gills, I realized, this was the fishing I loved. Pound for pound they fight harder than any bass. My kids and wife were laughing and having fun catching fish after fish; and they could not care less what kind it was. I thought back to my best memories as a youth and they all revolved around fishing and catching stringers full of some type of BG/brim/sunfish hybrid. There was also the occasional memory of a motorcycle or the occasional young lady, but mostly fishing trips. This led me to focus my fishing on panfish and I have never looked back. Thanks to the great folks on this forum I have learned about JDM gear and techniques and combinations of lures/baits I would have never thought of, and I couldn't be more thankful for the education I have received.

All of that to say, that for some reason, this year my shell cracker spots are completely infested with bass. I caught one on a cricket! I have never seen it like this, the occasional small one here and there, sure, but these are good sized ones and crazy aggressive, and on these super light Japanese rods, quite more than a fight. The best fish yesterday as far as excitement level was a small mouth the Mrs. hooked on my Palms Pinwheel. You would have thought Ahab got the white whale. We did manage a few Shells and some small gills , but at least they are starting to bite.

Sorry for the long Post, I guess I just needed to vent and I know, "pics or it didn't happen"

Good post and I agree 100% ultra light fishing for panfish far exceeds chasing bass. A lot of good fishing gets overlooked especially in creeks. Highlight is when fishing that way you will catch a multitude of different species including bass lol.

Catching makes the fishing more exciting, no matter what species gets caught, eh?

Nice outing! Love the crackers .
Growing up , my dad and my three brothers were dedicated bass chasers and made fun of me always chasing the gills . There were a lot days they went fishless and I would e reeling in what they called baby fish . LOL !
I started fishing ultralight as soon as I discovered it.
My first nice dedicated UL was a Mitchell 408 matched to a 5’ Shakespeare UL rod . I still have the reel .

I agree. My dad and I used to bass fish regularly and then started local tournament fishing. To me it stopped being fun. When I started fishing again I realized when we fished for fun and then got into crappie or panfish was when I had the most fun. I target crappie now but don’t complain to bad if the occasional ditch pickle bites…..

Nice catch and write up. Like the front stick steer boat --- my kind of boat.

Thank you. I get more comments on that little boat. I don't understand why they aren't more popular, I can't imagine a more perfect fishing boat for us.

Very nice catches. Reading your post took me back to my childhood chasing bream in local ponds and at Grandmas. Thanks!
