Drop shot rod?
Looking for a drop shot rod for sunfish using 4lb mono with 1/16 ounce weight.Usually use Gulp 1” minnows for bait.Thanks

I have a St. Croix panfish ULF 6’9” that works great for detecting those light bites on shellcracker that should be an equally drop shot setup for drop shotting.

I use a modified dropshot setup. Nothing fancy, nothing more than a snelled hook with a splitshot. I attach that to the line using a snap swivel and put a hook on the snap swivel at the same time. The end result is I'm using 2 hooks.

With dropshots the rod/reel combo is less important that a combo used for casting micro jigs for example. I do a lot of kayak fishing using dropshot setups. This 4' 8" pflueger combo has always produced.

That combo does extremely well with panfish.

Where I fish has it's fair share of catfish and that pflueger setup tends to struggle with the larger cats due to the size 20 reel's drag. I can't muscle/slow them down and the large cats tend to get tangled in the other rod, stringers, anchor line. I bring along a 5' 6" diawa aird x rod paired with a diawa 100 series reel for the bigger fish/cats.

For a longer dropshot rod I use a bass pro panfish elite 6' 8" rod paired with a diawa 100 series reel.

That bass pro rod is impressive for the price sporting Fuji guides and reel seat along with a cork/rubber butt. This rod is extremely sensitive.
Anyway just putting out there a couple rods that aren't high dollor by any means. But are easily good enough for dropshot fishing.

interesting question , but in the end personal preference plays a huge role in the decision .
some like fast tips some not so much and so on and so forth ....
should drop in somewhere with a huge selection of ultra light rods and feel a few is my suggestion

Last year when I was experimenting with the drop shot rig , my favorite rod turned out to be the 5’4” St Croix Panfish ot the Trout series .
I found I could feel light taps with the shorter rods .
In a JDM rod , I like the 5’6” Daiwa Ajing . The slightly stiffer rod with the fast tip was great at telegraphing hits .
The drop shot worked great in our Town Pond , but I gave up on using it at the big reservoir we fish . I broke off three times in a row and gave up . Left a lot of them fancy drop shot weights down there .
