Thread: Help me purchase a fly rod/reel?

This is one of the best deals I have seen online for a good quality combo. I have heard from some folks that own Dorber rods that Dorber will fix the rod if you break it and send it in. All you have to do is pay for shipping. Now Cabelas or BassPro Shops might have some good deals on fly rod combos also. If you want a good all around warm water fly rod, a 5wt. is what I would suggest. The 5wt. should be able to handle bream, Specks, bass, and other warm water fish yet not overpower the fish. I would also suggest that you take a few fly casting lessons from a casting instructor to save yourself a lot of frustration. Local fly and tackle shops should be able to point you to a fly casting instructor. Best of luck.

Bass Pro and Cabela's have lots of combos available in that price range. Also, check out Temple Fork Outfitter's (TFO) NXT starter outfits. TFO makes good stuff, and they're sold by both BPS and Cabela's.

An 8.5' or 9' 5 or 6wt is a good option. If you wanted one rod to do it all, I'd go with the 6, but that's a little heavy for panfish and a little light for smallies. I'd go with the 5wt for now and practice on panfish. If you like it, get a 7wt for smallies. A 5 and a 7 is a good combination.

I will also recommend the casting lessons. If you buy your outfit at a local shop, you should be able to get a brief lesson for free. Videos are helpful, but nothing beats a good instructor.

I don't own one and have never used one but I know a lot of folks on FAOL that do. I have heard nothing but good things about Dorber rods and wouldn't hesitate to get one if I didn't already have more rods than I need or can use right now. LOL They are a reputable dealer or they would not be an FAOL sponsor. I just posted it because it is a good deal that I wouldn't hesitate to take advantage of if I needed another rod.
