I spent years fishing below Pickwick Dam in 35 feet of water using 1/8 ounce jig heads…that just did not work out.

Randy, when you say 2 grams for your jig head is the upper limit for use with a trout magnet what does that equate to in terms of the usual jig head weights (example 1/32 or 1/16 etc)?? I googled what is 1/16 of an ounce in grams and it said 1.77 grams…so 2 grams is just a little heavier than a 1/16 it appears. But I wanted to ask to make sure I was right. What weight jig heads do you find yourself using the most often with the trout magnet? Thanks brother!

Crappie Magnet Jig Head-1/32oz Unpainted 25pk

Comes with a size 6 long shank hook . They work good for a variety of fish including Bluegill.
Thank you! I will be ordering some.

I wonder if I can fit a Garland Itty Bitty Swimmer on one of those.

To me the problem with Trout Magnet's panfish jig heads is at 1/64, they were designed for hanging below a float and had a nice slow fall. Pull the bobber forward, let the panfish magnet rise up and then slow fall. For casting and reeling in with a steady twitch retrieve, the slow fall doesn't matter. They should have a heavier version just for casting and retreiving.

I am tempted to try their TCB rod. I have read mixed reviews. People either love them or the tip breaks off. I am just not sure it would offer any gain on anything I already have.

Well I am ordering from Trout Magnet, do you have any favorite colors?

You are correct. I have found that for me a 1.5 gram is the sweet spot, equivalent to 1/19 ounce. The TM loses the action it has as you add weight. Today I went trout fishing. Water was only about 5-6 feet deep…but current was pretty strong. I used a 1/8 ounce D2 jig and caught about 40 trout in 2 hours of fishing. Taking a TM and putting it on a 1/8 ounce jig head and you do not even get a hit even though waters are teaming with trout. Now yesterday when there was minimum flow and fishing in 5 feet of water the TM killed them using jig heads of 1 and 1.5 grams. The results are the same in flat water if you put the TM on a 1/8 ounce head you won’t catch much of any specie at all. Jeff Smith told me this years ago yet I wasted a lot of time and bought a lot of heavy jig heads with number 6 and 8 size hooks…LOL. If you can get away with fishing a 1/64 ounce jig head you will be better off. The lighter the jig head the more action you will get. Now, the jig head Gill was talking about is a great one to have. The old Crappie Magnet jig head with the #6 hook works great. He must have made tons of them as I saw plenty of them in the TM Shop the other day. If I was not into using the JDM jig heads that old Crappie Magnet jig head is what I would use. The unpainted ones have a pretty sharp hook too.

    Regards

I second everything Randy said. He is the master!
That’s why he’s called Trout Magnet Man .

The main reason I switched to 2# Floroclear is to fish 1/64 jigheads . You’ll get more bites with the lighter jig .
But I fish from shore 90% of the time and distance means I’m covering more territory.
If I’m not getting bit close in I’ll put on a 1/32 TM head and reach out a little farther.

I use these all the time! One of my favorite lures. Here’s a video with a few fish I caught using them recently.

    GreenEyes,

Not sure if it’s already been mentioned in this thread, but Victor over at I_Fish sells the BG-1 jig heads that are phenomenal when paired with a trout magnet/panfish magnet body. They are 1 gram weight and have a tiny size 12 hook that is razor sharp. I caught some nice gills from the creek near my house using them. If you are able to get your hands on some, you’ll want to trim the trout magnet body down about 1 or 2 rings from the top of the lure to shorten it. The BG-1 has a short shank and trimming the magnet body will keep it from bunching up on the hook.
