My first thought was blue, the spot on the fin, you got me , it sure is fun catching them up top
I have the hardest time differentiating some of these sunfish from others. This fish was mostly a purple / lavender shade, with a bit of blue on the lower gill plate. That’s why I was thinking Bluegill. I’ve never had a Bluegill blow up on a topwater either, but this fish did. It hit that little popper like he was a good sized Bass and gave a decent fight on that light spinning setup. That round notch in the anal fin threw me off as well, but I’m beginning to think that’s not natural. Someone or something did that. Returned it to the water to be caught again.
All The best,
Glenn

That’s a nice bull bream. I’ve heard the old timers call them roosters, bulls, breast brim, coopernose and many other slang terms. Just go back and catch you some more.

Not the best pic..But you can see the "copper" band near the eyes. These Copper nose Brim are pretty much my favorite (fresh water) fish to catch and eat.

Copper nose blue gill of the male variety in full tuxedo. Got a feeling yall had a recent hatching of willow flys and that sucker was that he was after one.
