    Default Back to the Pond

After catching a decent bluegill at the pond yesterday, I wanted to give it another try and see if I could find some more .
I also wanted to try out a rod/reel combo . A 7’ Daiwa Procyon UL paired with a Daiwa Exceler 2500LT spooled with some 2# P-Line Floroclear.
Jig was a 1/32 Trout Magnet with a Sowbug body to start .
First two fish caught were small bass . Then I swapped rods to my 6’3” Abu Garcia Mass beat 3 but with the Exceler 2500Lt reel .
The seven foot Procyon combo did extend my casts as I hoped but the rod would noodle a little during the cast. And the rod felt heavy compared to my Abu Garcia .
I really couldn’t tell any difference in my casting distance using the Abu Garcia with the 2500 size reel . I think that had a lot to do with the solid tip and the fact that the rod had little vibration during the cast .
I beginning to think I should have ordered the 2000 in the Abu Garcia Beast . They weigh the same .
I did catch two bluegills and another bass before my two hours was up and I headed home for lunch.
I’ll be making some more trips to the town pond .

That pond looks really nice for walking the banks. I have several nice small lakes/ponds near me but the banks are an obstacle course with a lot of difficult casting in the likely places.

The Town pond is in a park . It has a walking trail that circles 75% of the pond .
The town just recently did a complete trimming of everything around the pond . More than they ever have .
About three years ago the town posted the pond as catch and release only but folks still load up buckets and take them home. The rule isn’t enforced like I feel it should be .
The ruling was to ensure a catchable population of fish for the kids fishing rodeo at our Founders day celebration every year.

Default Back to the Pond Part II

I went back to the town pond today armed with an old friend.
My 6’ St Croix Avid UL paired with another old favorite, my Shimano Stradic 1000FJ loaded with some 2# P-line Floroclear. The Stradic weighs 7.5 oz . A lightweight in its day .
I used various Trout Magnet bodies on a 1/32 TM head .
I brought four small bass to hand and lost at least that many , three of them jumped and threw the lure .
But I wanted some gills . That’s why I kept changing baits . I used some Slider bodies too .
I’ll be going back , but next trip I need to change tactics.
Think I’m going to try a drop shot with a small Bobby Garland bait or some ice plastics .
I think I need to get close to the bottom without getting mired up the slime and moss that’s down there .

I really like those St. Croix Avids. I wish I could afford another. Mine is a five footer with a Pfluger President on it.
