Very nice colors on those fish. Did you happen to find one of those streams you spoke of?
It’s Monday , time to meet up with my fishing buddy and chase green sunfish , or what ever we can get to bite our flies .
I, armed with a couple of Tenkara rods , a 7’ Goture Moonlight , and. 7–8’ Zoom Wild Water .
My buddy used a 5’9” Cabelas CGT 3wt flyrod .
He caught thirty and I caught fifty for a total of 80 . Most were small , but willing to bite panfish including bluegill, green sunfish, and spotted sunfish .
I think one of the spotted sunfish took top honors in most colorful this week. Check out the orange eyes and orange tipped tail and fins .
The green sunfish were beautiful as always.
Some of these would bend my Tenkara rods almost double . Some I would get near the bank and lift them with the line to keep from putting too much stress on the rod .
A fun day spent with a great friend. Can’t get much better than that !

The exploration turned out to be a bummer .
There were two coves off the main lake that I hoped would be coverts with riprap on both sides of the road , since this was located on a gravel road on a Wildlife Management area . They both had bridges with very little access .
The creek was a trickle about a foot wide . Looked more like a wet weather drainage . It was a blue line on the map , so I expected to find a creek . LOL !
But we did try a new boat ramp area that had the spotted sunfish just off the riprap . If I’d used a flyrod where I could have gotten a little more casting distance, I may have been able to find a few bigger specimens.
But , we had fun and man did it get hot out there today .

Pictures 3&4 look like they’re living down here in the tannic waters I fish. Y’all had too much fun but I’m glad you got a bunch. Keep after em, you’re gonna find the mother lode one day.

Gillchaser, we share very similar interest and that’s chasing green sunfish, preferably the much larger one that still eludes me. The spotted sunfish on the other hand my first time seeing it. In fact thanks to our band of panfish brotherhood at CDC, I get to read about sunfishes that I’ve heard or see before such as rock bass, warmouth, red breasted snd now spotted sunfish. Thanks for uploading photos and keep them coming!

LVSpinfisher , we catch bigger green sunfish every once in awhile .
The last couple of weeks they’ve evaded us .
Here’s one my buddy caught back in July .

Here’s one I caught a few years ago out of the town pond .
It’s the only one I’ve ever caught from there

Gillchaser, looks like you and fishing buddy caught the giants, as far green sunfish size goes of course. A diamond in the rough I’d say…lol. Like they say proof is in the pudding, you Sir confirmed I’m not imagining when I also hooked into 1 of 1000 at least that’s got me smiled from ear to ear:
…this one hit a chartreuse mini crankbait.

That’s a nice one !
Our state record is 1#7oz . So there’s some pigs out there , but I think you have to go through hundreds of little ones to find one .
But I don’t mind .
Also our state record spotted Sunfish is only 11oz . They don’t grow quite as large .
I’ve always been big fan of panfish , especially on some of the super lightweight rods that are available now.
I can catch bluegill just by blind casting , but the green sunfish in the places I fish for them have to be stalked and sometimes coaxed out from under rocks .
I cast and swim my flies by their hideouts, my fishing bud dangles the fly in the spaces between the rocks . He loses a few flies that way . The greenies are quick . .
