    Default Tenkara ?

    I’ve owned a couple of 6’ telescopic carbon/glass rods for a few years .
I vaguely remember playing around with them when I first bought them .
Originally, bought for micro fishing .
Today I got out one , built up a line for it out of a 6’ section of 2wt fly line . The level reel end . Attached loops at each end and added a 3-4’ tippet .
So with my arm length , I probably had about 12’ of fishing distance.
The whole rod retracts into a compact 15” . I use a leader holder to keep line put away when not fishing .
I spent a couple hours tying up some special flies to try on this lightweight fishing pole .
Off to the town pond for an afternoon tryout since the rain that was predicted held off .
It was a cloudy muggy afternoon.
My first cast drew a strike from a gill about 4-5” , but my first Tenkara fish did the shoreline flop .
On the next cast , I caught a smaller one .
A few minutes later I hooked into one that gave the little rod a nice bend .
Ended up catching eleven of various sizes in the hour plus I spent playing with my Tenkara outfit .
I have a 10’ all glass Tenkara rod on order .
Had a visitor that kept landing on my rod .

That's a pretty cool outfit. Sure did the job on some nice size gills.

It was fun . With the 6’ , I’m very limited in the area I can target .
Looking forward to getting the 10 footer and trying out . Although I’ve read 12’ is the standard length . I didn’t want to get to where the rod felt too tip heavy .
A very simple way to fish .

My nephew got out of the hobby and gave me his 12 footer, but I’ve yet to find a use for it. Your outing might just convince me otherwise, Gillchaser..lol

Use to watch videos of a guy using tenkara rod to catch trout out west. Some of those streams were only a foot or two wide. Interesting setup

Do you know what Tenkara translates to in English? It means “Fancy Cane Pole Fishing” Here is a YouTube video that explains everything about Tenkara fishing - TENKARA FISHING w/ HUGE Fly Fisherman - YouTube

In all seriousness, they are very nice due to their light weight and compactness. I have caught bass, bluegill, greenies, crappie, trout, etc. Perfect tool if you can reach the with its limited range. Additionally all of my tenkara rods are very light, which means I have to throw light flies such as foam spiders, or small nymphs. I use it from my kayak when the fish are stacked up along a weed bank, just ease along the bank with a little foam spider in the evening. Great fun!

Weatherman said the rain was supposed to start around 10:30 this morning and the radar map confirmed it .
I got to the pond a little after nine armed with my 6’ Tenkara rod and a Fanny pack filled with flies .
It took a little longer this morning to get my first gill. But a decent one .
The rain came all of a sudden at 10:24 and I had hooked seven and landed six .
Not bad for just over an hour’s fishing.
For reference, the black handle section of my rod measures 6.25” .
