    Default Summer come lately!!!

Hello fellow panfish enthusiasts, been another dry month this part of the country. But that doesn’t bother me but what does seems like since the pandemic started 2 plus years ago, the bluegills and green sunfish population either has declined dramatically, especially the bigger one, or the spawning season come late. We shore fishermen are at the mercy of water level snd temperatures and it seems this year no different. Since mid May I’ve been out about 6 times all time got skunked or very few hook-ups. Yesterday evening I thought I’ve waited long enough to see if anything change and went out just before Sunday for a hour of fun after work and here’s what caught me off guard: lots of little fishes but adults are no where to be found. During hard time people tend keep more fishes for taco snd that’s understandable but WOW! Even the carps are small…lol. Enjoy the pictures!

Some pretty little fellers there, glad to see you got out. The last one kinda looks like a golden shiner, colorwise. Sure beat sitting home wondering.

Yes, you are correct Mr. Bum. That last fish is a golden shiner (Roach Minnow). We target them in the very early spring (Feb-March) Because of their speed and shyness I refer to them as our black water, cypress swamp Bone fish. Verry sporty little guys, especially the ones pushing a foot in length. A great way to remove winter rust from the fly gear.

I think there are a lot more people fishing since Covid and they are keeping what they catch. Saw a guy with two 6" crappie in his basket as he was leaving, wouldn't have even made a sandwich. You aren't too far from Lake Havasu that has lots of big sunfish. I fished there in 2015 and caught several redear pushing 2lbs. from one of the docks there. Great place to fish if you have a couple days off.

JJJ, that’s a very good point and it did cross my mine several occasions that I do I fact have many vacation time-off. I will definitely try it out and report back. However only have been to Lake Havasu once before (the London Bridge thing), could one of the docks you were referring to called Site Six by any chance? Thanks all for chiming in!

Gillchaser, sorry to get back to you so late but I mean to explain it wasn’t fly fishing per se. One of my go to rigs is dropshotting with flies or very small jigs on spin gear because bare hooks usually get swallowed and I don’t like killing fish I don’t intend to eat. But man suffice to say it was very fitting since all fish caught were no more than 3 inches long..lol!
