    Default In between short trip

Rained most of the night and part of the morning.
Weatherman is calling for T-Storms to start around 5:30 this evening and with lunch in between, I got to fish between 11-1 .
Fish are strange , what works one day , is ignored the next .
Last trip , they wouldn’t touch one of my spiders , but when I put on a woolybooger jig , Bam !
Today I started with a woolybooger. I got a couple tail tasters , but no takers .
Switched to a spider on the drop shot and changed location to the other side of the pond . Bam ! I catch a decent shellcracker.
Guess the pond robbers missed one the other day .
A few casts later I catch a small LM , a few more casts and it’s time to head home to put the ribs in the oven .
Combo today was a 7’ St. Croix Ultralight paired with my new Ultegra 2000S .
Last night I changed out the line for some SOS 2# .
I don’t know if it was the noodle action of the long UL or the SOS line , but I wasn’t getting the casting distance I expected with the longer rod .
If I get a chance to go back this evening, if the weather folks are wrong, I’ll give the SOS , Ultegra a try on a shorter rod . I may have gotten spoiled by 2# P-line .
It’s been awhile since I’ve fished the seven footer SC . I don’t care for the noodle action it has .
I’ve noticed that in the longer SC ultralights, those over six foot .

After lunch I headed back up to the pond for what turned out to be a 45 minute trip .
A line of T-Storms was headed up from the south and I knew I wouldn’t have very long to fish .
I headed home after the fourth clap of thunder I heard from a distance.
It wasn’t fifteen minutes after I got home , the storms hit .
But it was worth the trip .
I switched rods to a 5’ St. Croix Premier ULM with the Ultegra 2000S , still loaded with SOS 2# line .
I was able to match the distance I was getting with the long rod , and gained a lot of control and sensitivity.
Fishing with a spider fly on a drop shot , I landed four fish , small , but a lot of fun on the five footer . Two gills and two small crackers.
Oh yeah , I almost forgot, I snagged one of the turtles today .
I was able to get him in and with my hemostats removed the fly from his legs . Was as big a honeydew melon . I was surprised I got it in on the SOS 2# line .

Fun spot you got there, the 7ft St. Croix I have is The Panfish series and it is Extra Fast, not a noodle rod by any means. Collecting dust now as it is one piece and doesn’t ride as safely in the truck as I would prefer.

The pond is four minutes from my house . 2 miles by bike , which I have ridden up there to fish , using my four piece SC travel rod strapped to the rear rake of my mountain bike.

This one is an older model Premier I bought at Dicks Sporting goods off a discontinued rack . I think I paid around $80 for it .
The Panfish series are a little stiffer .
After fishing the five footer this evening, I’m back on the short rod train .
Long rods have their place , but a shorter one is so much more fun to fish with , IMO .
The 5’4” Panfish and trout Series that got broken in my accident were just about perfect .
I ordered another 5’4” Trout Series tonight .
I’m hoping the auto insurance pays me back for their replacement. I filed it and provided sales receipts .
With one of the rear seat backs in the RAV4 folded forward , up to a 5’6” will fit .
I’d like to find some kind of rod rack that hangs them near the roof .

Good visits to the pond and some pretty fish. If you find an option for overhead in the Rav, I’d be interested in what you have. I had a 2000 Jimmy and the butt on the passenger floorboard and tips leaned towards the middle was the best I came up with. I miss that car, so does my wife.
