    Default Town pond trip

We’ve had several nights of below freezing temps .
Ponds cool off fast , but they also warm up fairly quickly.
I search out areas that catch the morning sun and keep it most of the day .
I got to the pond around noon .
I was armed with my 5’ St Croix UL Panfish series Moderate action rod , mated with my Daiwa Team Daiwa Fuego 1000 ,loaded with 4# Original P-Line .
I planned on using a drop shot rig with a 1/80th Woolybooger jig about 12-14” above a 1/16th ball head jig with the hook shaft cutoff at the head for a dropshot weight .
Casts were in the 50-60 feet . A molasses slow retrieve would take a while to get back it . I worked the rig like a shakyhead . Twitching , inches at a time .
With the little St Croix rod I could feel the weight and jig as it moved along the bottom. Anticipating the thump .
This type of fishing could get addictive.
It took about 15 casts and over thirty minutes before I felt the first thump . And as it turned out , the largest gill of the trip , one just at the 9” mark .
Next thump was from a small LM , then I switched to a float and catch the smallest gill of the day .
I missed the drop shot feel and went back to it and just before I needed to leave , I caught my fourth fish , another gill.
A fun two hours of winter time fishing .

That town pond is a lifesaver for you in the winter. Nice to be able to catch fish in January, no matter where you live! Congrats!

Yes it is . So glad the town made it catch and release only a couple of years ago . Although we still have a couple sneak out a few of them every once in awhile .
I have a friend who lives on the upper end of a pond that lets me fish his dock . And it’s productive after a sunny morning. The sun seems to draw them up into the shallow headwaters .
Once the Covid numbers drop in my county , I’m going to try to make a trip over there . I’ve caught Bluegills , Shellcracker, Crappie , LM Bass , and pickerel off that dock . Some days I’ve caught most of species using my float N jig .

Congratulations on pulling a few to the bank. We have 4 days predicted to be fairly sunny (50 degrees) and thank goodness no rain. I'm hoping to give some of my 1/100 oz jigs I've tied a workout.

Sure beats what I was doing. Going to be 45* Saturday morning, think I’ll be drinking coffee instead of freezing.

45! 45 Degrees? Right about now that’s a heatwave up in my neck of the woods! That’s about what we are looking at today and I’m going to head to my club field and get in some RC Flying!

They’re threatening snow flurries for us Sunday night .
Grocery stores are already selling out of bread , milk , and bottled water .
People around here go crazy when they here the S word .
Mondays high is predicted to be 46 , so if we do get a dusting, it’ll melt by Monday afternoon.
Back to 50 for a high Tuesday , so maybe I can get in an hour of fishing , if the wind isn’t bad
