51 degrees was the predicted high for today , it was 48 at around 3:45 with a 6-10mph wind .
Felt pretty cool to my old bones but I stayed at the pond for about an hour .
I started off with my float ‘N Jig rig and on about my fifth cast the wind blew my cast close to the walkers bridge . As I slowly retrieved it with tiny twitches with pauses every few sequences to let the jig fall , the wind continued to blow my float rig toward one of the bridge posts . It got too close and I had to pull it around the post . Then I paused , a twitch and the float slowly started to disappear. I raised my rod and it had a nice bend in it .
After a nice little battle , I slid a 9 1/2 incher onto the bank .
The rod I used was a St. Croix 6’6” Triumph light power , fast action rod that’s closer to an UL than it is a light , IMO . Mated to an older Shimano Sahara 1000 spooled with 4# Original P-Line .
Jig was a micro 1/80th Woolybooger pattern bunny butt .
I fished the area for another 20 minutes or more without a nibble .
I swapped out my rod with a St Croix 5’6” trout series to see if the length made a difference in casting distance . Today it didn’t .
After a few casts with the float rig , I decided to try my drop shot idea . 1/80th jig tied about 12-14” above a 1/16th weight . The weight was a round jighead with the hook cut off .
Second cast as I slowly worked the jig back in , I felt the thump and set the hook on another nice gill . This was a little shorter , but thick , a handful .
A few more cast , and the wind was getting to me with the sun setting fast . I was back at my truck around five headed home to warm up .
I’ll be using drop shot again .

Good looking fish. Was the reason for using a jig head for the weight in your rig simply convenience, or is there something special about cutting the hook off a jig to get the weight?

Good trip. I like it when a short trip works out. Those were both nice fish. That’s a dandy little measure board, are they still available?

Those are some nice looking ones. Caught a lot on the drop shot in 2020 but didn't use it much last year. You've inspired me to put it back in the rotation.
