Blue skies and nice temps. at this small public land lake in the northern panhandle of West Virginia today. About a 20 minute walk in from the parking area and not mowed during spring and summer. Only other visitor spotted was this whitetail that came down the back of the left bank for a drink. Have fished this lake a few times and have not got into any real good size fish as of yet. Have run into a few people fishing on previous trips and I wonder how many fish are taken out. The water is stained but thought by going down today I might see some spawning activity in shallows but nothing going on. Still, a nice place to wet a line and not a lot of trash thrown about which is a big plus.
Looks like a great place to fish.

Chaunc,
I have been wondering what's going on with this lake and I think it has to do with grass carp. There are no visible aquatic plants at all and the water has bad clarity. These carp are huge and have probably been in there a long time. Without the aquatic vegetation not good for a bass/bream lake. And fish do not appear to be abundant as far as a reason for stunting. This land was previously a commercial orchard and is now a WMA. Managed for pheasants and I don't think they do anything for this lake except keeping the beavers from clogging drainage pipes. I'll have to try to talk to a officer or land mgt. employee down there.
a few big reel screamer fish will fix any stunted fish populations up quickly in a small water body .
sometimes though its more about the size of the aquarium than the fish numbers ......just saying

Ketchn,
Have caught a few LMB in the 12" range the few times here and probably are larger present. No aquatic vegatation and turbid water is not a good sign. They put a lot of food/cover plots on this WMA for the pheasants and any chemicals/fertilizers that may be used would drain into watershed for this lake which appears to be spring fed. Maybe that is contributing to the suspected poor water quality and lack of aquatic plant life. As said, the land mgt. crew down there is probably best bet for any info concerning that lake. Thanks.
