Not necessary at all....but you can't abuse them. I have broken a couple....and after I cried a little I politely got online and ordered the replacement top section. I know exactly how my rods broke...it was sheer stupidity on my part. I do not recommend boat lifting fish with any JDM UL rod...but I find myself slipping and doing so with smaller bluegill....but I should not do it at all. I have landed 30 pound fish with these rods....never broke one on a fish and I have had these rods doubled into a U. Never exceed the line rating....and always transport to and from water broken down if it is a 2 piece rod. Here is a video I made of how to care for these rods...really any UL rod.

it is interesting to me that they offer a "part " of the rod for sale as a replacement , this indicates one of several possibilities you know .
mass produced and not so perfectly balanced would be my first thought and then expectations that it will break is my second thought .
now mind you never had one in my hand , but I do know some of the best rods around you cant buy a top half alone for them .
very interesting to be sure and has my gears turning , wonder if Loomis or St. Croix sells rod halves/replacement uppers too ?
we should explore this further no doubt about it ....
so is JDM a brand or does it just cover any Japanese sold rod ,somehow i am lost on this subject totally

JDM is "Japanese Domestic Market". It does not mean Made in Japan....although a lot of the gear is made in Japan...it means sold in the Japanese market. As to rod sections. I know BnM...Leland's Lures....Phenix Rods.....St. Croix....will sell you an upper section of a rod. JDM rods do not break any more readily than any other rod. Most folks do not like to own up to it but 99 percent of rod breakage is caused by the individual....not a manufacturing defect.

and or does that mean if it is designed for us and they sell them there then they are JDM as well ?

to be sure rods that get broken are more like a 100 % human failure.
so why would a consumer here want a rod designed for the Japanese market is my next question ?

“Designed for the Japanese market” means (to me, anyway) very high quality and priced accordingly. The Japanese value quality and are willing to pay for it.
JDM UL tackle works great here in the US for bluegill, crappie, trout, etc. The bass guys are also interested in JDM tackle.
Ketchn thanked you for this post
I have sought JDM because I want to be able to cast light lures such as a Trout Magnet farther. Take a 35 ft cast. If I could get to 45 ft, that's better. If I am fishing a bream bed and find that I need that 45 ft cast due to the boat being slightly out of position, I do not have to move the boat.
The other reasons touted are fun factor, high quality drag, ease of turning the handle, engaging the reel, smoothness. Light weight. Overall, higher quality. Longevity.
If I find JDM does not give me longer casts, it will need to be superior in those other departments cuz it is expensive. I have plenty of fun with a $17 Shakespeare rod and $30 Lews spinning reel. Even more fun with a $50 9ft B'n'M Sam Heaton SS rod and a $50 Pfleuger President. The $600 JDM rod/reel combo enroute to me will have to be a step up. I hope it is!
