Those that hit the crankbait, are those bedding bream?
87 today but the Gills were hittin pretty good for the middle of the day. Quite a few small ones, but managed to weed them out and tie into a few good ones. Here's a few pics.
I need to learn to find those bull bream. Hard fighting and great tasting

Very nice fish. Please show us the purple bait you used. For mid day that was good fishing.

Hot here in TN as well, 88 at my house. Good catches in the heat, they still eat!

Livemusic,
I would venture to say its the onset of the spawn period. This lake that I am currently fishing has a very small amount of accessible bank area to fish shallows from due to very heavy brush cover. So, I am not able to see the bluegill beds from where I am standing but fishing shallow areas. I have seen some pumkinseed beds very close to shore. The crankbaits I have been using here are floating models, which can run in very shallow water. I use small cranks most of year, shallow and deep water with pretty good results on panfish. Sorry for the long read, wanted to explain.

Skeet,
Here's a pic and the story on the purple baits. Bought some split tail grubs years ago on Ebay and these were thrown in as extras. They stretch like a rubber band and won't break but the plastic is so dense that you cannot just slip a hook into them. I use a craft needle with the hook tied to a piece of mono & thread through towards the front to get the hook in. Can fish shallow and using a small foam strike indicator a few feet up to get casting distance. Small shot in between to get a bit deeper. You lose them before you will ever wear out. Durability off the charts, have never seen plastic like this before. Got 4 colors and the fish seem to like them, all that matters.
Good thread and follow up info, MR. They really liked those baits. Mid day can be a tough bite for sure. I have switched to early AM and it is good to no later than mid morning depending on where I am and sun position.

Bob,
It seems to take forever to do things as the years roll by & and I do fish more middays(or just getting lazy). I am fishing the shady banks and try to move back and forth between spots while there to give the fish a break. Fortunate to do during the week when usually have the places to myself. Didn't mention in original post, but lost a Pumkinseed right off shore on one of those purple baits that was a really good fish. That bothered me all day, why it had to be that fish to get off, but that stuff happens to us all. Heck, I'm just glad to be able to be out there no matter what time of day.
