Cool looking reel, Tom. Big fan of vintage gears.
Did some test casting with my Loomis S781 IMX rod and my Loomis SJ6400 IMX. I used the same Diawa SS1300 reel spooled with the Berkley 4# Fireline on both rods. To my surprise I got almost the same results with both rods. One is 64" long and the other is 78" long. I filled the spool to the rim and I believe this contributed to increased casting distance. You couldn't get away with this with mono or fluorocarbon. The casting weights were exact by my weighing and the distances were tape measured in my driveway. Each value is a average of 20 casts. I have been using these combo's for probably 35 years for my gill and crappie fishing. The sensitivity with the braid is outstanding. I think maybe I have too much time on my hands!
1/16oz - 60'
1/32oz - 49'
1/48oz. - 35'
On anything lighter I use a weighted casting float.

Cool looking reel, Tom. Big fan of vintage gears.
I've got 9 Diawa SS's I've had for many years. They are good reels. 700, 1300 and 1600's.Sent from my SM-G960U using Crappie.com Fishing mobile app
Interesting with the braid, Tom. Usually the advice is fill below the rim due to line management issues. That said, if it works it works! Thanks for your report.

I think there is something missing on that reel Tom. Still to chicken to do that!

A lot of times if I can't throw far enough I move the boat closer.

If you think 4lb fireline cast far, you should try 2lb fireline ... you'll be astonished.
Didn't know they made 2# fireline. Been about 5 years since I bought any. With 1/16oz and 1/32oz jigs I can cast distances considerably farther than my cast during my regular fishing.Sent from my SM-G960U using Crappie.com Fishing mobile app
You might be surprised what your trout magnet actually weighs. The trout magnet jig weighs 1/64oz by itself. Sent from my SM-G960U using Crappie.com Fishing mobile app
