Pretty fish. Isn’t the Trinity River one of the rivers around there with giant Alligator Gar?

I ain't sure a person could not enjoy a nice short trip catchn some sun fish......
Since you put them in your truck how long do they last in this heat before they start to get hard and smell???
when i was younger there were gar so big in there it baffled the mind , i have seen and hooked so many monster gar that i have lost count . never landed any of the 6 plus footers but did get one or 2 of the 4 to 5 foot fish on the bank .
we used to actually ty to ketch them 40 years ago , we called them fresh water marlin
the younger ones can get some pretty good air, the sad part is mankind has pretty much killed off all the true giants in the upper reaches of the trinity's many different forks .On many occasions i saw telephone pole diameter size gar back when , eyes big as baseballs and that isnt an exaggeration !
They only exist now a days in larger sizes south of dfw best i can tell and there are several guide services that offer monster gar trips .mankind often eliminates apex predators without just cause ......

NEVER EVER EAT any fish from the river , the fisheries folks told me that no matter how pretty they look and some are quite magnificent ,they are plum full to the top with so many different toxic chemicals that the list is almost never ending .
From below the dams on almost every lake in the dfw area there are consumption warnings on the fish .
I think if i remember right that includes all the arms of the trinity and for sure the 2 running thru ft worth . the west fork and the elm fork are under warning status , but i think the clear fork is likely in the same boat as well .....sad but true .

That is excellent advice on any of the local waters in my neck of the woods. It IS sad but has been so for years. Heavy metals, storm and agricultural runoff does create quite a toxic brew. The lower Delaware, canals and creeks are all off limits. Even those pretty mountain streams up in PA can have damage from mining. Fun to catch but put ‘Em back.

That would make my lunchtime much more enjoyable. Pretty fish.

one time a few years back i had kept a herd of panfish , when i dumped them into one ice chest from the other i apparently missed one that slipped out and went up under one of the ridiculous number of items in the bed of the truck .
bought 2 or 3 days later i walked by the truck and went WOW something smells dead in there and started moving stuff back there around .
Sure enough there was nicely mummified 10 inch crappie up under the debris
