I’ve always liked bigger reels. Bigger reels have bigger spools. Bigger spools give more casting distance and better overall line management.
Anybody else here like to use the little 500 size spinning reels? I have a few with 2 lb mono on various length ultralight rods. Have heard several guys say they have issues with the small reels but I rarely do. Have tried larger reels but anything over 1000 size just doesn't feel comfortable to me on ultralight rods. Just seeing what other bluegill fans think/prefer.

1000 and 2000 size are the same only spool slightly bigger. I still use my shimano 750 but happy with Daiwa Tatula 1000 and 2000. The Tatula even though a little bit bigger but still lighter than 750.

I use both, 500 and 1000 Shimano for me. Super smooth and light.
Yes I also have a 1000 size Shimano with 8lb braid. I do agree that the bigger reels cast farther but most of our gill fishing is in smaller farm ponds/rivers/creeks where a cane pole would work (and my youngest loves to use sometimes). Will probably seriously consider going to a 1000 if/when we ever fish bigger waters in the future. But man I sure get a kick out if using those tiny 500s!

I like the size of the 500 because it just screams "I'm ultralight fishing", but the 1000 size seems to be the sweet spot for me. The spool is big enough to put larger line on for bass fishing if you so desired. I'm really liking the Daiwa Regal LT 1000D, but the one issue I have is that it's rated to hold 250 yards of 4# mono. That's just absurd, IMHO. I wish there were an option for a shallow spool that held 100 yards of 4# mono. That's my only complaint on the reel. They don't make it in a size smaller than 1000.

I was eyeing those as well and thought the same thing. Don't know where I'd ever need that much 4lb mono!

Is this not the same reel with the shallow spool? Says it holds 70 yards of 4lb Nylon, plenty for Panfish

Hmm. I was wondering why there was no JDM Regal LT reel. Sure looks like the same reel.
As for OP's question, 1000 is as low as I go these days. Most of my reels are 2000 size.

I’ve had a couple of 500’s but literallywore the gears out of them. The 1000’s and 1500’s are good for me and I feel the bigger diameter spools have smoother drags and less coil in the mono from the small spools of the 500’s. At better too. Just my 2 cents.
