I order everything now online.
I just order online and skip the store visit 50/50 chance they have what you want when you want it. Plus I get to side tracked with other stuff I don’t need. I also take advantage of the 10% off on Tuesdays and get the 5% military discount plus free shipping most times. Easier on me to order online with the 15% off and free shipping.

I worked at a Bass Pro for 12 years... The stock stores based on regional fisheries and what sells "best". Anything not related to the "main fisheries" can be requested, but it's up to the staff to recognize those opportunities and make the requests. On the tail end of that, more something to permanently be added to a stores assortment, the sales must justify it or it will be deleted by the corporate office and any replenishment must be done by special orders.
Hard to beat shopping online these days. And even if you find something in a store you like, doesn't mean that once you hook on a reel, line and lure that it's going to perform the way you think it will. I check out ratings on several fishing forums, media outlets and online retrailers first, then decide on what I want to try. Hasn't been a bad experience yet.

Ebay for a majority of fishing supplies bar none! Better prices and variety than anywhere I've shopped either locally or on-line.
S/h usually free and none of the stuff I order are bid items. Amazon not very good when it comes to fishing.
When possible I like to buy direct from the vendor. (Especially the little guys) Sometimes it may cost a little more, but they get 100% of the profits

I try my best to follow what BobC said.
Got my local fishing shop, Hooker Bait and Tackle. Great selection and great people. For some of the higher end JDM stuff, I go next door to Fishing ProTech. Lucky to have two great places nearby. Of course, Walmart and the Web fill in some gaps.
